The Blood Bank or Blóðbankinn in Iceland was established in 1953 and is part of Landspítali University Hospital. It serves the whole of Iceland with a population of 377.000 inhabitants and is self-sufficient with regards to labile blood products.

The Blood Bank has its headquarters in Reykjavík and a regional center in Akureyri. In addition there is one mobile collection unit.

Additionally, The Blood Bank functions as The National Haemovigilance Office; The National Blood Group Reference Laboratory; The National Tissue Typing Laboratory; The Tissue Establishment for Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cells; The Icelandic Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
